For decades, food options for American weddings have remained relatively unchanged. Traditionally, most dinner entrées have been limited to beef, chicken or fish, offered buffet-style or served platted at wedding receptions.

Today, expectations are higher. Grazing stations, pizza bars, interactive culinary kiosks, and other unconventional options have forever changed wedding food norms. While, traditional, sit-down dinners at wedding receptions have been enhanced with customized decor, such as burlap table runners, beaded chargers, pine cone place card holders, wooden table numbers, and tea length menus.

Whether you are planning a wedding for 300 or 30, there are no rules on how to serve your guests. Ultimately, the layout of the wedding venue you select will be a determining factor when planning your wedding food.

“A small group doesn’t have to mean small assortments,” says Kristy Kimball, owner and creative director of Chivaree on Park and Modern Bloom, “Couples hosting gatherings can opt for food stations, and use the layout of our upper and lower levels to control the flow of the party.”
