Wedding Reception: Sit-Down Dinner vs. a Buffet.

For decades, food options for American weddings have remained relatively unchanged. Traditionally, most dinner entrées have been limited to beef, chicken or fish, offered buffet-style or served platted at wedding receptions.

Today, expectations are higher. Grazing stations, pizza bars, interactive culinary kiosks, and other unconventional options have forever changed wedding food norms. While, traditional, sit-down dinners at wedding receptions have been enhanced with customized decor, such as burlap table runners, beaded chargers, pine cone place card holders, wooden table numbers, and tea length menus.

Whether you are planning a wedding for 300 or 30, there are no rules on how to serve your guests. Ultimately, the layout of the wedding venue you select will be a determining factor when planning your wedding food.

“A small group doesn’t have to mean small assortments,” says Kristy Kimball, owner and creative director of Chivaree on Park and Modern Bloom, “Couples hosting gatherings can opt for food stations, and use the layout of our upper and lower levels to control the flow of the party.”

Gilding the Lily

Simplify décor and minimize your budget by choosing a beautiful wedding venue.

Our sister company, florist Modern Bloom

Stunning blooms, dramatic lighting, elegant chair covers, inventive seating chart displays – it’s all in the details when it comes to wedding décor. Styling your soiree with the right blend of floral, décor and design elements can bring your wedding day vision to life!

But the truth is, wedding décor planning requires hard work. It is easy to become overwhelmed in a sea of Pinterest boards, and the cost of all those small details can quickly add up. So how can you nail down the details without consuming your décor budget?

Photo by Happy Gnome Photography, Floral design by Modern Bloom

First things first, pick your venue. The venue you select will play a significant role in your wedding décor and design budget. Empty or drab venues, for example, offer a blank slate for you to incorporate your décor theme. However, transforming these boring spaces into a beautiful reception - covering eyesores, adding lighting, furniture to fill void, can become time consuming and expensive.

Resist ‘gilding the lily’ & simplify decor in an already well-designed space. Choosing a beautiful venue for your reception sets the tone for your entire event.  You can minimize your décor budget by simplifying. Add a few, key personalized details - table linens to match your color scheme, DIY chalkboard or a framed seating chart display.

How much should you spend on flowers? Wedding floral arrangements and décor are stunning and impactful. In an inherently, beautiful reception hall, floral designs can be simplified by using smaller and simpler table centerpieces, alternating tall and short flower arrangements, or opting on one unforgettable statement piece with candlelight accents.

Chivaree on Park has the unique advantage of having Modern Bloom onsite florists, The floral and design experts of Modern Bloom work with couples and their budgets, to create stunning wedding floral designs that complement their wedding theme, and blend flawlessly with our newly renovated, industrial glam reception venue.

A beautiful venue sets the visual experience for your photographer. Dean Krapf of Dean’s Photography in Watertown, Wisconsin incorporated many of Chivaree on Park’s vintage and modern design elements into his recent wedding shoot. Krapf made use of the renovated historic building's dramatic string lighting, vaulted ceilings, antique furniture, and ornate vintage props to capture impressive imagery.

When it comes to planning a unique and beautiful wedding, it’s all in the details. An impressive event venue is an easy draw for couples looking to find the right balance of décor and resist ‘gilding the lily’. Schedule a tour at Chivaree on Park if you are looking for a beautiful wedding venue in Southeastern Wisconsin. We would love to help you bring your ideas and design inspirations to life at our beautifully renovated, historic wedding venue!
